Important Notice: New location for LISREL 8.8 Student Edition example files
By default, LISREL 8.8 Student Edition example files are installed in:
C:LISREL 8.8 Student Examples
In previous versions of LISREL8, the example files were copied to
C:Program FilesLISREL8S
This change is based on the following MicroSoft guidelines for the
installation of applications on Windows Vista platforms:
1. The application must reside in a protected location in the file system.
Program Files and WindowsSystem32 are currently the two allowable
protected locations.
2. Applications should not attempt to write to locations, such as the following:
C:Windows
C:WindowsSystem32
Program Files{application}
Considerations: Vista users copying example files to Program Files folder
If the example files are copied to the Program Files folder,
the application believes it was able to successfully read and
write directly to Program Files.
The transparency of file virtualization with Vista enables applications
to perceive that they are writing and reading from the protected resource,
when in fact they are accessing the virtualized version.
For example, a user is running a computer that is shared with others.
This user attempts to save a LISREL output file under the
C:Program FilesLISREL88S folder:
C:Program FilesLISREL88SEX1.OUT.
Although C:Program FilesLISREL88S is protected, the file will be
saved successfully from the application's point-of-view because of
Windows Vista file virtualization.
To achieve this, the file write is redirected to
C:Documents and SettingsUsersUsernameAppDataVirtual StoreProgram FilesLISREL88SEX1.OUT.
For the user to discover his virtualized files, he/she must navigate
to the virtual store with the Compatibility files button on the
Explorer toolbar.user's virtual store.
The files that a particular user updates and saves will remain independent
of the other virtualized files on the computer.
Amos 5.0 Release Notes

2. Using other programs to view text output
3. Differences between Amos 4.01 and Amos 5
4. New text macros
5. '$' character not permitted in variable names
6. Documentation changes

1. Web browser requirement
Amos's text output files (with the AmosOutput extension) are best viewed with the built-in viewer, which requires that you have Internet Explorer 6 or later installed. IE 6 does not have to be your default web browser. It just needs to be installed.
If you do not have Internet Explorer 6 or later installed, Amos will attempt to use your default web browser to display text output. The following browsers display Amos output satisfactorily: Mozilla 1.2.1, Netscape 7.02 and Opera 7.0.1. Some older browsers do not render Amos 5 tables correctly.
The text output viewer supplied with Amos 5 provides many capabilities not available in a web browser. For this reason, the installation of Internet Explorer 6 or later is recommended.
2. Using other programs to view text output
The following techniques for viewing Amos text output files (with the AmosOutput extension) have been tested with Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Excel 2000, Internet Explorer 6 and Opera 7.
• On the program's menu, click File, then Open, and select the AmosOutput file that you want to view.
• Drag the AmosOutput file from Windows Explorer to the program's window.
• In Windows Explorer, hold down the Shift key while right-clicking the AmosOutput file that you want to view. Then click Open With on the menu that pops up, and select the program that you want to use for viewing the AmosOutput file.
3. Differences between Amos 4.01 and Amos 5
• When means and intercepts are estimated, Amos 4.01 and Amos 5 use different baseline models in computing fit measures like CFI and NFI. In Amos 5, the baseline independence model requires observed variables to be uncorrelated while leaving their means and variances unconstrained. By contrast, the baseline independence model in Amos 4.01 fixed the means of observed variables to zero. The effect of this change is that, in Amos 5, if means and intercepts are estimated but not constrained, then fit measures like CFI and NFI come out the same as if means and intercepts were not estimated at all.
• Amos 5 uses Raftery's (1995) formula for BIC. Amos 4 used Raftery's (1993) formula.
4. New text macros
Amos 5 provides the following new text macros in addition to those in Amos 4.01. (Search for 'text macros' in the online help index for an explanation of how text macros are used.)
• time displays the time in short format. The displayed time is updated whenever the path diagram is read from a file, saved or printed.
• longtime displays the time in long format. The displayed time is updated whenever the path diagram is read from a file, saved or printed.
• date display’s today’s date in short format. The displayed date is updated whenever the path diagram is read from a file, saved or printed.
Lisrel 8
• longdate displays today’s date in long format. The displayed date is updated whenever the path diagram is read from a file, saved or printed.• filename displays the name of the AMW file.
• longfilename displays the fully qualified path name of the AMW file.
• datafilename displays the name of the data file.
• longdatafilename displays the fully qualified path name of the data file.
• datatablename displays the name of the data table (for those file formats that allow a single file to contain multiple data tables, such as Excel workbooks.)
5. '$' character not permitted in variable names.
The '$' character is not permitted in variable names. In SPSS data files, variables with names that contain the '$' character are ignored.
6. Documentation changes
The Amos 5.0 Update to the Amos User's Guide incorrectly states that the Amos Graphics menu is customizable. The Amos Graphics toolbar is customizable, but the menu is not.
The Amos 5.0 Update to the Amos User's Guide incorrectly states that the Amos Graphics menu and toolbar can 'float' in separate windows. The menu and the toolbar are always 'docked' to an edge of the Amos Graphics window, and cannot be made to float.
